Ship Description
Royal Caribbean's "Freedom of the Seas", is the
largest cruise ship in the world. The physical characteristics
of the ship are 160,000 grt with a length of 1,112 feet and width
of 184' and 28' of draft, cruising speed of 21.6 knots. She has 14 elevators,
15 guest decks, 1817 staterooms of which 1084 are oceanview and 842
have balconies. An interesting feature on this ship is that some of
the inside staterooms have bay windows overlooking the Royal Promenade,
which by the way is 4 stories high and 445 ft long (one and one half
times the length of a football field playing area). The smallest stateroom
is 160SF while the largest, the Presidential Family suite is 1215 sf
in size and sleeps 14 guests. Totall guest capacity is 3608 when fully
occupied and they are served by 1389 crew. Each stateroom has WiFi access,
Flat Panel TV, mini bar, safe, and individually controlled cabin
temperature.
From bow to stern, Freedom of the Seas is packed
with remarkable innovations like the FlowRider, a wave simulator that
lets everyone experience the thrill of riding that perfect wave; the
H2O Zone, an interactive waterpark for the whole family. There are two
cantilevered whirlpools suspended 112' over the ocean and a combined pool
area larger than any other cruise ship. A 43' high rock climbing wall,
golf simulator, sports court for paddle tennis and basketball, pitch
and put golf course, boxing rink, one of the largest fitness centers and
an ice rink are available for the active guests.
The Leonard-Galileo-Isaac dining room, on three
levels with a central atrium, is something to behold in its splendour.
Yet despite its size I found the individual dining areas to be very
quiet and relaxing. Breakfast is served in the Jade and Windjammer dining
rooms, while alternate restaurants such as the Italian Portofino restaurant
and Chops Grille, Johnny Rockets hamburger restaurant, Sorrento's Pizzeria
provide ample alternate dining opportunities.
Specialized bars are just too numerous to mention. They range
from the Champagne Bar to the Cafe Promenade and everything in between.
Of special interest to the younger set would be Ben and Jerry's icecream
parlor.
All in all this is a mega ship with tremendous
decor and opportunity for entertainment. The cost of all of this? About
US$850 mil which may or may not include the $8 mil of artwork on board.
Sailings are almost sold out for this year. So if you are interested

By the way a sistership the Liberty of the Seas is presently being build.
