Curacao, the largest and most developed of the "ABC islands"
of Dutch heritage (the others are Aruba and Bonaire), is the
classic desert island. The climate is dry, the soil barren with
some cacti, and beaches are few. Many visitors see Curacao as
a port-of-call on a cruise itinerary, or include it as part
of a vacation that begins in Aruba and includes Bonaire. Curacao
has incredible scuba diving: dive sites like Mushroom Forest
(mountains of star coral capped like giant shiitakes) and Saba
Wreck and Reef, whose reefscapes are packed with corals--brain,
star, pillar, yellow pencil, staghorn, and finger. The calm,
warm waters at Playa Lagun and Wet Suit City are perfect for
scuba diving and snorkeling.
